Hatty Taylor is a figurative oil-painter who lives and works in Hackney, East London. She graduated from the Slade School of Art in 2019, and previously studied at Camberwell. Taylor’s work is an extension of a spiritual pursuit for meaning, entertainment and existence. An interest in psychology and Zen Buddhism from a young age led her to the conclusion that the physical and spoken world is not all there is, and the full extent of reality is beyond human comprehension. Nature, also known as God or life, is an indifferent energetic force, fact or law. Taylor’s paintings arise from an interest in serving and channelling this force through a meta-conceptual process-based method. She is instructed by her intuition in every aspect of the creative process: governing values, imagery, technique, practical procedure and conscious idea choices. Intuition and beauty are driving and stopping motions respectively, as they are mystical. Other related values include patience, technical and aesthetic power, individuality, irrationality and play. Her interests include the zeitgeist, emotions, delusion, the imagination, human nature, archetypes, time, and visual poetry. For Taylor, painting is an ineffable medium. A sensory experience that exists in the abstract world of the visual, in the same way music is a sensory experience of sound. She sees language as a potential hindrance to it, judgment as powerful and subjective interpretations as interesting. Her current series could be seen as a presentation of an alternate universe she has a strong connection to.
