In the studio I’m listening to...
It depends on my mood, but I’m usually listening to podcasts when I don’t need silence - my go tos are Miss Me?, The Healthy Artist podcast and Bella Freuds Fashion Neurosis, I’ve also been listening to Cate le Bon on repeat atm.
The first piece of art I remember creating...
This might count more as performance art, but I remember being on the beach as a kid pretending that I was mixing up cake ingredients with wet sand and would then make lots of different sand cakes with it and pretend I had a cake shop.
Something in my studio that looks strange to other people...
Lots of torn up paintings?
Something I’m trying to do less of in the studio...
Not going on Instagram - failing at that, continuously staring at a painting I don’t know how to resolve for hours when I should just turn it around and not look at it. Procrastinating because of the fear I’ll ruin something - So I usually purposely ‘ruin’ it to get past this.
The kind of day that usually leads to good work...
Coffee, good weather! If the suns out I just have a better day. Meditating and journalling before going to the studio - I’ve just got back into doing this again and it really helps me to get out of my own way when making work!
Something I’ve changed my mind about in the last few years...
That a good painting should take a long time. I had this belief that if I made something quickly, it couldn’t be any good. I thought it had to be this long, difficult venture - not sure where this came from, but I realise, this is not always true!
